Planet of the Apes Action Figures

Planet of the Apes is a novel by Pierre Boulle, originally published in 1963 in French as La Planète des singes. As singe means both "ape" and "monkey," Xan Fielding called his translation Monkey Planet. It is an example of social commentary through dystopia. Planet of the Apes (1968) was a groundbreaking science fiction film based on Boulle's novel, and was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and starred Charlton Heston. It was the vision of producer Arthur P. Jacobs, who commissioned Rod Serling to write the script, but the final version would be written by Michael Wilson. Jacobs enlisted Heston (who enlisted Schaffner) well before any production deal was made, and Heston's star status was instrumental in gaining support for the film. They gained the support of Mort Abrahams after producing a short film demo which showed that the makeups (initially created by Ben Nye, Sr., not to be confused with the design by John Chambers for the actual film) could be convincing enough to not appear funny, as most "monkey suits" up to that time had. In the English-language films, the apes are insulted when called "monkeys," but in the original book, no distinction is made because "singes" is a French word for both "apes" and "monkeys".

Beneath the Planet of the Apes is a (1970) science-fiction film directed by Ted Post, and the first of four sequels to 1968's Planet of the Apes. The film stars James Franciscus and Kim Hunter, and features Charlton Heston in a supporting role. The sets of the mutant's council chamber and the temple of the bomb were redresses of the 42nd Street–Grand Central (New York City Subway) and hotel lobby sets from the film Hello, Dolly!. Contrary to popular belief, the council chamber set was not redressed as a pool in the movie Superman as Beneath was filmed in the United States and Superman was filmed entirely in the United Kingdom (with the exception of some minor location shooting in New York City and some background plates of desert land). The pool set was later used again in Arnold Schwarzenegger's Last Action Hero.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes is a 1971 science fiction film starring Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, and Bradford Dillman. It is the second sequel to the Planet of the Apes movie of 1968, the first sequel being Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). This sequel is considered by critics to be one of the better of four sequels made. Its plot centers around many social issues of the day including race, social status, scientific experimentation on animals, nuclear war and government intrusion as well as women's rights. In this film, actor Roddy McDowall returns to recreate the character of Cornelius which he created but did not portray in its entirety in the previous film. A new character of Dr. Milo is introduced played by actor Sal Mineo, who hoped his career would gain from the new project much as McDowall's career had from participating in the first film.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), directed by J. Lee Thompson, is the fourth film of the Planet of the Apes series. It explores mankind's future history, as established in Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), and is the most violent sequel in the series. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is the rise of the ape civilization en route to their dominating planet Earth.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes is a 1973 science fiction film and is the fifth and final entry in the Planet of the Apes series. It was directed by J. Lee Thompson. Considered by critics to be the weakest of all the sequels, the film's budget was also the lowest.

Planet of the Apes was also a short-lived American science fiction television series that aired on Friday evenings at 8:00 (Eastern) on CBS in 1974. The series starred Roddy McDowall, Ron Harper, and James Naughton. Mark Lenard guest starred in almost every episode. It was based on the 1968 Planet of the Apes film and its sequels in which McDowall also starred. The series ran from September 13, 1974 to December 20, 1974. Although fourteen episodes were produced, only 13 were originally aired; the 14th previously unseen "lost" episode was included in the DVD box set which is now available. Fox had promised to include promotional materials and trailers for the episodes with the DVD set, but no such footage was included. The show was cancelled after one season, because of low ratings, due to direct competition with NBC's Top 10 hits Sanford and Son and Chico and the Man.

The remake of the original Planet of the Apes film, Planet of the Apes is a 2001 science fiction film and remake of the 1968 film of the same name. Tim Burton directed the film, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti and Estella Warren. Planet of the Apes tells the story of astronaut Leo Davidson landing on a planet inhabited by intelligent humanoid apes. The apes treat humans as slaves, but with the help of a female ape named Ari, Leo starts a rebellion. Development for a remake of Planet of the Apes started as far back as 1988 with Adam Rifkin. Rifkin's project almost commenced pre-production before it was canceled. Terry Hayes' script titled Return of the Apes had Oliver Stone, Don Murphy and Jane Hamsher as producers and Phillip Noyce as director with Arnold Schwarzenegger set to star. Creative differences ensued between Hayes and financier/distributor 20th Century Fox. Chris Columbus, Sam Hamm, James Cameron and the Hughes Brothers later became involved. With William Broyles Jr.'s script, Tim Burton was hired as director, and the film was put into active development. Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal rewrote the script, and filming took place from November 2000 to April 2001. Planet of the Apes was released to generally negative reviews, but was a financial success. Much criticism focused on the confusing ending, although Rick Baker's prosthetic makeup designs were praised. Despite its financial success, Fox chose not to produce a sequel.
